ABBREVIATIONS, ACRONYMS AND DEFINITIONS

Technical people love to use abbreviations and acronyms. It gives them a little edge in that they know what is going on and the rest of us don’t have a clue. Part of getting into a technical career is learning the “lingo” and what it all means. We can have a look at some of the abbreviations and acronyms, but as you know from using social media there are many more.

An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or phrase.

ACRONYMS

An acronym is a shortened form of a word or phrase which can be pronounced as a word.

Remember that all acronyms are abbreviations, but not all abbreviations are acronyms.

 

DEFINITIONS

A definition is a statement of the meaning of a word, often drawn from an acknowledged authoritative source, such as an encyclopaedia or a dictionary.
We are not going to say that Artificial Intelligence is an authoritative source until it is really a lot better.

Voltage Voltage is the electric potential difference per unit charge between two points in an electric field.
Speed Speed is the rate at which an object changes its position with time.
Velocity Velocity is the rate at which an object changes its position with time, in a specific direction
Protocol A protocol is a formal set of rules that determines how two or more systems exchange information. It specifies the structure, timing, sequencing, and error-handling procedures required to ensure that communication happens reliably and consistently across a network.
